Somehow, the busyness, background noise, and happy-taste bud cappuccinos help me focus and get stuff done… and there’s A LOT I need to – let me reframe that – **want** to get done! 🤩
What rituals do you have in place to help you focus? Here are five things that I do. Let me know if they help:
- Be still and connect with myself and my body – even if just for 2 minutes. Being aware of my body and my breathing helps calm my nervous system, which, in turn, helps me show up from a place of relaxation and ease instead of from a cortisol-infused state of urgency.
- A great cuppa coffee. Not because of the caffeine content but because it’s become a subconscious signal to my mind that we’re about to sit down and focus – it’s become a ritual. What is a ritual for you?
- Pen to paper before I open my laptop. We’ve become screen-savvy, but the psychological power of physically writing has multiple benefits and contributes to the creation and focus process.
Scientific Findings: Enhanced Memory and Learning: Research has shown that writing by hand can improve memory retention and understanding. Mueller and Oppenheimer’s study in 2014 found that students who took notes by hand performed better on conceptual questions compared to those who used laptops. (Mueller, P.A., & Oppenheimer, D.M. : Enhanced Cognitive Processing: A study by Mangen and Velay (2010) showed that the physical act of writing activates the brain more than typing, as it involves more complex sensorimotor skills. - Lion’s Mane. A recent addition to my supplements, I’ve truly felt a shift in my cognition and energy levels and no, it’s definitely not placebo. (**Please consult a physician before introducing any supplements or medication to your diet**).
- Movement. I haven’t moved yet today because I left home early, but sometimes even 10 squats wake up my body. Remember Christina and Meredith Grey from Grey’s Anatomy doing squats between shifts? And there’s science-backed research to support how doing squats can help! (Be sure that your form is correct, to prevent injuries).
Scientific Findings: Energy and Concentration: Hormonal Response: Squats engage large muscle groups and can trigger the release of hormones like adrenaline and endorphins, which can enhance alertness and energy.
: Exercise and Vagal Tone: Regular physical activities, including squats, may improve vagal tone which is linked to better stress management, mood, and overall parasympathetic nervous system function.
