The Alignment Advantage: Why Capable Teams Still Struggle to Perform

One of the most common assumptions inside organisations is that performance problems are capability problems. If results are slowing down, collaboration feels strained, or innovation has stalled, the instinct is often to ask:

  • Do we need better skills?
  • Better systems?
  • Better people?

But after working with many leadership teams and organisations over the years, I’ve noticed a common thread:

Most performance challenges are not capability problems – they are alignment problems.

Many of the teams I work with are already intelligent, experienced and highly capable. On paper they should be operating with ease, momentum and strong results, and yet a lot of push and pull is required to ‘make things happen sustainably and efficiently’.

  • Energy drops.
  • Decisions take longer.
  • Collaboration becomes effortful rather than natural.

And it’s not because people are incapable, but because alignment has quietly weakened somewhere inside the system.

Why Alignment Matters More Than We Think

Alignment determines three critical dynamics inside any organisation.

1. Clarity
Do people understand what truly matters and where the organisation is heading?

2. Energy
Do individuals feel connected to the work and to one another?

3. Execution
Can teams move forward with momentum, or does progress feel heavy and slow?

When alignment weakens, energy drains and execution slows. Teams often respond by pushing harder, adding more pressure, more meetings and more effort.

But when alignment strengthens, something interesting happens. Energy re-ignites.

People stop pushing so hard just to keep things moving. Work begins to flow more naturally and performance becomes intentional rather than forced.

The Alignment Advantage

Over the last while I’ve been refining the thinking that sits underneath my work.

At the centre of it is a simple idea I call:

The Alignment Advantage

Alignment → Energy → Performance

When the right things align inside individuals and teams, performance becomes easier to sustain. Not because people are doing more, but because their energy and effort are moving in the same direction.

The BMBB Alignment Model

One of the ways I explore alignment with teams is through a framework I call the BMBB Alignment Model.

It looks at four layers that influence how individuals and teams operate:

Body
Energy, wellbeing and nervous system regulation.

Mind
Thinking patterns, clarity and the ability to focus.

BEing
Identity, values and leadership presence.

Business
Strategy, collaboration and execution.

When these four layers align inside individuals and teams, several things shift naturally:

  • Clarity strengthens.
  • Energy rises.
  • Collaboration improves.
  • Execution accelerates.

Alignment is often treated as a culture initiative or a “nice to have” but, in reality, it is a performance strategy.

Because when people align with what they are doing, why it matters and how they work together, performance becomes far easier to sustain.

A Question for Leaders

Where in your team might a small shift in alignment unlock a disproportionate shift in energy or performance?

Sometimes the biggest breakthroughs don’t come from pushing harder – they come from improved alignment.
