Happiness: A Fundamental Human Right

‘Happy’ International Day of Happiness!

I was looking for an inspiring quote that embraced the essence of today’s celebration and honours Human Rights Day, in South Africa, tomorrow and came across this insight by Roy T. Bennett.

“Attitude is a choice. Happiness is a choice. Optimism is a choice. Kindness is a choice. Giving is a choice. Respect is a choice. Whatever choice you make makes you. Choose wisely.”

A year ago, while going through a tumultuous time in my life, I created THE HAPPINESS PROJECT – a private Facebook group to inspire and empower members with tools and perspectives to invite more happiness into their lives and way of being.

Here are a few of the tools that I expand on in my LIVES:

1. Choose Your Attitude: Every day, we wake up with a choice: Will I let negativity cloud my thoughts, or will I choose a more expansive energy?

Our attitude shapes our realities, so why not choose one that contributes to creating an inspiring, fulfilling and authentic life?

2. Embrace Happiness: Happiness isn’t something you hope for – it’s something you choose, every 10 seconds if you must.

3. Opt for Optimism: Not the superficial toxic-positivity type of optimism but rather a way of looking at the world. Possibilities over obstacles, setbacks as stepping stones, and failures as lessons.

4. Practice Kindness: We – us and the world – need this more than ever! In a world that can sometimes feel cold and chaotic, true kindness can be a gentle salve to ease the pain we’re experiencing in the world. Question: What is JUST ONE THING that you can do right now that will inject a little bit of kindness into the world #forhumans #foranimals #forourplanet

NOTE: Check out my previous post about ‘Kind vs Nice’

5. Practice Self-Awareness: If I had one wish, that could ease the pain in the world, it would be that each of us spend 60-minutes a day doing the internal reflection work.

6. Respect All: Humans, Animals and Our Planet. Respect is the foundation of a harmonious society and the cornerstone of every generative relationship. Choose to treat others with dignity, empathy, and understanding, knowing that every individual deserves to be seen, heard, and valued.

In closing, our choices shape not only our own lives but also the world around us. So, let’s choose happiness, and let’s choose to make every day a celebration of love, kindness, and hope.

And hey, if you’re ready to dive deeper into creating a more fulfilling, inspiring and authentic life—if you’re seeking guidance, support, or inspiration—I’m here as your coach, inspirational speaker and workshop facilitator.

Together we can create a kinder world for all.
