Self-Love Reframed: What It Really Means to Honour Yourself

February Isn’t About Loving Yourself

It’s About Honouring Your Life

February gets labelled the month of love. Commercialised products and events surface as soon as the festive season splurge is over. Look, I’m not ‘not’ for romance but I’m also beyond boxing ‘love’ as outwardly showy displays of affection.

Do I still want to exchange meaningful and memorable moments with a certain loved one? Of course! And…

I want to offer a different lens this month.

What if self-love wasn’t something vague or performative, but something practical, grounded, and deeply honest?

What if self-love simply looked like honouring your life?

Not the life you think you should want.
Not the version that keeps everyone else comfortable.
But your life – as it is – and as it’s quietly asking to become.

Honouring Yourself Is Often Easier to See Than “Loving Yourself”

For many people, “self-love” feels loaded. It feels emotionally charged – maybe even uncomfortable.

So let’s reframe it.

Question for you: If you weren’t sure what self-love looks like…what would honouring yourself look like instead?

Why this question?

Because ‘honouring’ is practical. It’s observable and something we instinctively know how to do for others.

And yet, it’s often the very thing we withhold from ourselves. Can I get an ‘Amen!’?

Where This Shows Up Right Now

This is a pattern I see – in my work – again and again:

  • You’ve been wanting a career change for a while but uncertainty or fear keeps you where you are.

  • You’ve started a new chapter — newly single (or maybe even single for a while but you haven’t felt ready to step into another relationship yet), empty-nesting, reinventing — and unsure who you are now

  • You feel a strong sense that something needs to change, but you can’t quite name what

So you keep on keeping on. Busy, capable and – of course – too ‘responsible’ to leap. I see you.

Perhaps you’re feeling a tad disconnected – from your needs, your dreams, your future and the next steps.Honouring yourself doesn’t always mean blowing your life up.

Often, it starts with a much smaller, braver question:

“What would honouring myself look like right now?”

Not someday. Not next year. But right now.

Sometimes, It’s One Small, Visible Cue

When I was writing my book, I noticed how easily I procrastinated on other areas that weren’t visibly contributing to the journey – although they were necessary.

So I made my environment support me.

On an A3 board behind my laptop, I wrote a few simple symbols & words:

  • A Nike swoosh
Every time I looked up, it reminded me to ‘just do it’

  • Breathe
Because when I focus deeply, I hold my breath i.e. brain fog and exhaustion)

  • Stretch
Because sitting for hours dulls clarity and energy

  • H₂O
Because unless water is visible and within reach, I forget

It sounds simple, right? Almost too simple.

BUT because I’m aware of what my body, mind and BEing needs, I’m able to adjust my environment to support them. This is how real change, momentum and self-honouring happens.

It’s beyond willpower — it’s through actively designing your life to support the version of you you’re becoming.

Sound like something you’d like to try?

A personal note: Honouring Yourself Doesn’t Mean Choosing Against Others

Choosing for yourself does not require being careless, cold, or dismissive of others.

You can honour your needs and be kind.
You can choose growth without burning bridges.
You can change direction without negating what others meant to you.

Self-honour doesn’t need to be harsh to be honest.

I’ve been on the receiving end of someone choosing ‘their happiness’ but in a very destructive, self-centred and careless way. Even with all of the mindset and somatic tools at my disposal, it really knocked me.

Your Just One Thing This Week

If self-love feels abstract, try this instead:

Write down one word or symbol that represents the change you’re ready to activate this week.

  1. Put it somewhere visible.
  2. Let it interrupt autopilot.
  3. Let it activate movement and momentum

Because honouring your life isn’t about doing everything – it’s about doing one aligned thing — consistently.

Why I’m Sharing This Now

This is exactly the work we go deeper into in my Vision & Manifestation (Recreate Your Life) workshop happening 17 February at 20:00 (SAST) online.

It’s not surface-level vision boards and not wishful thinking.

But real clarity around:

  • who you are now

  • who you’re becoming

  • what needs to shift — and how to support that shift sustainably

Those who book early get a head start — extra tools, integration support, and space to arrive grounded rather than rushed.

If February is about love, this is an invitation to honour your life enough to consciously shape it.

Reflection Question to Leave You With

If honouring yourself were the goal this month — what is just one thing you’d stop, start, or change?

You don’t need to do this alone. And you don’t need to have it all figured out.

Sometimes, you just need the right questions — asked in the right way — with someone walking beside you.
