A prayer to help you feel less overwhelmed and more balanced.

Sjoe. All of the feels. And, although I’m experiencing an avalanche of life’s knocks, I’m holding onto a prayer that I (literally) tattooed on my body 10 years ago – a prayer that has been my go-to since I was only enough to recite it.

“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” Reinhold Niebuhr

Personal conversations with my coaching and Access Bars clients have had a similar thread through them lately: ‘life’ feels particularly heavy and challenging right now. It seems to be a sentiment that many people on social media community groups.

What can you do when feeling overwhelmed by the uncontrollable?

  1. Pause everything.
  2. Physically move to another room or step outside.
  3. Stretch and expand your body—extend your arms skyward, look up, breathe into your body, and feel your breath traveling down through your feet and into the ground.
  4. Take a deep breath in. Fill your chest, hold for four counts, then exhale completely, emptying your lungs. Repeat twice.
  5. Notice any emotions that arise. Don’t suppress; recognize and acknowledge them. What are they signaling? What are they protecting you from? What are they inviting you to start, stop, or change?
